Sport is often explained through simple stories. A medal is attributed to determination. Low participation is blamed on lack of an evolved sporting culture in a country. A newly announced policy is celebrated as a solution. Yet, sport is rarely shaped by a single individual, institution, or event. It emerges from the interaction of education, governance, culture, safeguarding, infrastructure, economics, communities, and public policy.
System Check is a weekly essay series where I examine contemporary issues in sport through the lens of systems thinking. Drawing upon research, practice, and interdisciplinary scholarship, these essays move beyond personalities and headlines to explore the deeper structures that influence participation, inclusion, performance, and social change. The objective is not merely to critique existing narratives, but to encourage more thoughtful conversations—and ultimately, better decisions—for the future of sport in our country.
